The Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) is an employer benefit for hiring jobseekers most in need of employment. Employers make the hiring decision and complete minimal paperwork to claim the tax credit. All employers are eligible for this benefit, and there is no limit on the number of qualifying individuals who can be hired.

Hire From Among These 8 Groups of Jobseekers to Qualify for the WOTC:

1. Long-term TANF recipient

2. Short-term TANF recipient

3. Veteran

4. 18-39 y/o SNAP (food stamps) recipient

5. 18-39 y/o designated community resident

6. Vocational rehabilitation referral

7. Ex-felon

8. SSI recipient

For most target groups, the WOTC is based on qualified wages paid to the employee for the first year of employment and the number of hours worked.

Generally, qualified wages for non veteran groups are capped at $6,000.The credit is 25% of qualified first-year wages for those employed at least 120 hours but fewer than 400 hours, and 40% for those employed 400 hours or more.
